Abstract: This paper proposes a control algorithm for single-phase battery inverters to provide voltage unbalance compensation in distribution networks with high penetration of photovoltaic panels and electric vehicles. A typical distribution system is studied to quantify the impact of single-phase loads and generating units on voltage unbalance levels, and identify the conditions that lead to the highest voltage unbalance. Voltage unbalance compensation is then performed by regulating active and reactive power exchange between three single-phase battery energy storage units and the power grid.

Abstract: Due to increasing penetration of Inverter-based Resources (IBRs), harmonic distortion is a growing power quality challenge. To improve the accuracy of harmonic studies including IBRs, detailed models are required, but data from manufacturers are difficult to obtain or proprietary. This paper compares the ideal current-source IBR model with a generic impedance-based model, that does not require detailed knowledge of the control system.

Abstract: The increasing penetration of single-phase equipment in the distribution system, such as photovoltaic (PV) inverters and electric vehicle (EV) chargers, may cause an increase of voltage unbalance levels, thus leading to detrimental effects on the distribution system and the equipment connected to it. This research work aims to control single-phase battery energy storage (BESS) units to mitigate unbalance conditions.

Voltage Unbalance Mitigation by Novel Control of BESS Single–phase Inverters

Abstract: A voltage unbalance compensation method using three single-phase battery energy storage systems (BESSs) is proposed in this paper. A novel control strategy based on orthogonal signal generation is presented to regulate active and reactive power injection from the BESS inverters. A modified version of the ‘IEEE 13 node’ benchmark three-phase distribution system is built […]
