Research Project

The success of robots that are designed to work interactively with humans significantly depends on their ability to recognise human’s expressive gestures and activities and adapt themselves accordingly. This research project is broadly concerned with developing novel approaches to learning visual representations of human behaviour and investigating how these representations can be used by robots. Specifically, the candidate will research advanced computer vision and deep learning techniques to aim at addressing one of the following research problems: (i) recognition/anticipation of human actions/activities; (ii) recognition of social signals such as facial expression, head pose and eye gaze; (iii) interpretation of human behaviours to estimate higher level phenomena such as cognitive states and emotional states; (iv) synthesis of human behaviours via robots, within a context of practical applications in human-robot interaction. Alternatively, the candidate can propose another relevant problem in a closely related domain.

Qualifications

The ideal candidates will have a good degree in computer science, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or equivalent. They will have outstanding technical skills and prior experience in at least one of the following fields: computer vision, machine learning, deep learning, and human-robot interaction. Experience in writing research papers is a plus.

The ideal candidates will have a passion for contributing to development of smart robotic systems that can facilitate an effective interaction with human users for the purpose of assisting them. Applicants are expected to be self-motivated and able to work independently. They should be committed to advancing the state-of-the-art research and publishing in top research venues.

Research Group

The selected candidate will join the Centre for Robotics Research (CoRE) group within the Department of Informatics at King’s College London. The mission of the CoRE group is to develop creative robotics approaches to society’s most critical challenges. The centre brings together expertise in sensing, high-precision manipulation, machine learning, intelligent control and human-robot interaction to address a broad range of problems facing health, manufacturing, agriculture, emergency response domains and much more. The selected candidate will be a member of Dr Oya Celiktutan’s research lab and will contribute to ongoing research activities at CoRe in the areas of computer vision, deep learning and human-robot interaction.
